What the Price Covers
The $186 per person price bundles gear, food, drinks, medication and the reserve fee. The listing contradicts itself on the return transfer, so confirm it on the booking page.
Included in the $186
Hotel pickup in Holbox, fast boat transport, a certified bilingual guide in English, Spanish and French, snorkelling equipment and a life jacket. The swim itself comes with 2 water entries per couple, always with guide supervision. Also included are the Cabo Catoche snorkelling stop, the virgin beach visit, the Santa Paula River visit, a light breakfast of a ham and cheese sandwich, fresh fish ceviche, fruit, water, soft drinks, motion sickness medication and the CONANP marine park bracelet fee.
That bracelet fee is the standout: most Holbox swim listings charge the reserve fee separately or list it vaguely.
- Hotel pickup in Holbox
- Snorkelling equipment and life jacket
- Light breakfast, ceviche, fruit, water and soft drinks
- Motion sickness medication
- CONANP marine park bracelet fee
Paid on Top
Tips and personal expenses are not included, and neither is the hotel return transfer after the tour. Bring cash in Mexican pesos for tips and any stall purchases. At $186 per person this tour costs more than the Holbox Whale Shark Tours Group Trip at $179.52 and less than the VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim at $205.

One Contradiction to Confirm
The listing's own Includes list puts the hotel return transfer both inside and outside the price, without a label between the two halves. The separate not-included note says the return transfer after the tour is not covered. Read it as not included, and confirm on the booking page before you pay.
Holbox island has no cars in the tourist area as far as the listing goes, so ask where the boat docks and how far your hotel is.
- Confirm the return transfer on the booking page
- Ask where the boat docks at the end of the day

Book It If, Skip It If
Book it if
- you want the smallest listed group on Holbox, 8 participants, with the CONANP marine park bracelet fee included in the $186 price
- you want more than the swim, with a Cabo Catoche reef snorkel, a ceviche beach stop and the Santa Paula River flamingo area in one 7-hour day
- you get seasick, since motion sickness medication is included and hotel pickup comes to your reception
Skip it if
- you are over 65, pregnant or have mobility impairments, since none of you can board this boat
- you value the strongest review record over group size, in which case book the VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim, with a 4.9 from 267 reviews against this 4.6 from 57
- you want the cheapest shared swim, in which case the Holbox Whale Shark Tours Group Trip lists at $179.52, or a shorter day on the Holtours Whale Shark Tour at 6 hours
Pros and Cons
An honest read of this listing against the others on Holbox.
What we genuinely like

The honest downsides
- Sightings are not guaranteed and the refund for a no-sighting only applies if the operator cancels

- Children pay the full adult rate of $186

- 7 hours with no stated return time, a long day for young children
Who it's NOT for: If a long review record matters more than group size, book the VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim instead, with a 4.9 from 267 reviews.

How the Tour Runs
The day starts at your hotel door in Holbox and ends back on the island. Exact clock times are not published, only the early morning pickup and the 7-hour total.
Pickup and the Boat Ride Out
Your guide collects you at your hotel reception in Holbox early in the morning. After a short briefing and your snorkelling equipment, you board an 8-person speedboat at the harbor and head toward the protected waters near Cabo Catoche. One reviewer reports a 2-hour sail out and whales found within 30 minutes of searching that day, which gives a sense of scale, not a promise.
The reserve caps the swim window at daylight hours, 07:00 to 14:00.
- Hotel pickup in Holbox, early morning
- Snorkelling gear handed out before boarding
- Fast boat toward Cabo Catoche
The Search and the Swim
The captain and certified guide scan the water for whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, which can grow over 12 meters long. Once one is found, each pair of participants gets up to 2 water entries, always accompanied by the guide. Under the reserve rules only two swimmers are in the water with a shark at a time, keeping at least 2 meters from the sides of the head and 3 meters from the tail fin.
No touching, no feeding, no flash photography.
- Up to 2 water entries per pair
- Two swimmers at a time with the guide
- No touching, no feeding, no flash

After the swim the boat moves to the Cabo Catoche reef for a snorkelling stop, where tropical fish, manta rays and nurse sharks appear depending on sea conditions and visibility. Next comes a virgin beach with fresh fish ceviche, fruit, water and soft drinks served. The return route runs through the Santa Paula River area, known for flamingo sightings, before the boat docks back in Holbox.

The Whale Shark Season and Swim Rules
The swim only operates inside the official season, and strict in-water rules apply to every boat in the reserve. Here is what governs your day.
The Season Window
The whale shark observation season in the Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve runs 15 May to 17 September, per the reserve's management programme. Local operators point to July and August as the peak weeks around Holbox. The listing itself states no season, so confirm open dates on the booking page before planning flights.
If the activity cannot run due to weather, government restrictions or safety reasons, the cancellation policy gives a full refund.
- Season: 15 May to 17 September
- Peak weeks around Holbox: July and August
- Reserve swim hours: 07:00 to 14:00, daylight only
How the Swim Works in the Water
Two swimmers at a time go in with the guide, per the reserve programme. NOM-171 sets the distances: keep 2 meters from the sides of the head and 3 meters from the tail fin. One boat gets 30 minutes maximum with a shark before the next takes its turn.
Swimming means surface snorkelling, no dives. A life jacket or 4 mm wetsuit is required, and this tour includes the life jacket.
- 2 swimmers at a time plus the guide
- 2 m from the head, 3 m from the tail
- 30 minutes maximum per boat with a shark
Weather and Conduct
The swim stops when wind rises above 25 km/h. Boats cap at 3 knots near wildlife at the surface. Biodegradable sunscreen only, and apply it before boarding rather than in the water.
No flash or artificial light, no selfie sticks in the water, no contact with the animals. Boat speed, spacing and the no-touch rule are all enforced by CONANP permit conditions.
- Swim suspended above 25 km/h of wind
- Biodegradable sunscreen only
- No flash, no touching, no feeding

Who This Tour Suits
Not every Holbox swim fits every traveller. Here is where this listing wins and where another one serves you better.
Good Fit
This tour suits swimmers who want the smallest listed guest count on Holbox, 8 participants, and a full day rather than just the swim. The Cabo Catoche reef snorkel, the ceviche beach stop and the Santa Paula flamingo area give non-swimming hours real content. Hotel pickup, motion sickness medication and the included CONANP bracelet fee remove three separate morning tasks.
The 4.6 rating comes from 57 verified bookings.
- Small groups of 8 or fewer
- Travellers who want reef, beach and flamingos too
- Guests prone to motion sickness, medication is aboard
Look Elsewhere
If reviews matter most, the VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim carries a 4.9 from 267 reviews against this tour's 4.6 from 57. If price leads, the Holbox Whale Shark Tours Group Trip lists at $179.52. If you want a shorter day, the Holtours Whale Shark Tour runs 6 hours instead of 7.
Travellers over 65, pregnant women and anyone with mobility impairments cannot board this boat at all.
- Most reviewed: VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim
- Lowest listed price: Holbox Whale Shark Tours Group Trip
- Shortest day: Holtours Whale Shark Tour
What You Might See
The day covers several habitats, so the species list goes beyond one shark. Nothing here is promised.
Whale Sharks
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world, reaching over 12 meters. The IUCN Red List classes the species as Endangered and Mexico lists it as threatened under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, which is why the rules are strict. Sightings are not guaranteed because the animals roam freely.
On a good day reviewers report several individuals and two swims, but every trip is a search.
- IUCN status: Endangered
- Mexico status: threatened under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010
- Sightings never guaranteed
Reef and River Wildlife
The Cabo Catoche reef snorkel can produce colourful tropical fish, manta rays and nurse sharks, depending on sea conditions and visibility. The Santa Paula River area on the return route is known for flamingo sightings. Reserve waters also see dolphins, sea turtles and jellyfish reported by visitors.
Bring a dry bag mentality: nothing gets fed, touched or chased on any part of the day.
- Cabo Catoche reef: tropical fish, manta rays, nurse sharks
- Santa Paula River area: flamingos
- Also reported in the reserve: dolphins, sea turtles, jellyfish

Getting to Holbox for the Tour
The tour starts on Isla Holbox, so most travellers arrive via Chiquilá on the mainland and cross by ferry. Plan the night before, not the morning of.
Ferry from Chiquilá
Several operators run the Chiquilá to Holbox crossing, roughly 25 minutes, hourly through the day. Ferry tickets are bought at the dock in Chiquilá. Because pickup happens early in the morning, arrive on Holbox the evening before.
- Crossing about 25 minutes, boats roughly hourly
- Ferry tickets are bought at the dock in Chiquilá.
- Stay the night before, do not day-trip the ferry
From Cancun Airport
The drive from Cancun airport to Chiquilá takes about 2.5 hours. A prebooked Cancun Airport to Chiquilá Ferry Shuttle costs $56 per person and removes the need to negotiate taxis late at night. Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo also pay the Visitax, online at visitax.gob.mx.
Settle it before you travel, not at the dock.
- Cancun airport to Chiquilá: about 2.5 hours by road
- Shuttle $56 per person, booked in advance
- Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo also pay the Visitax, online at visitax.gob.mx.

What Travelers Said
My son (16 years) was very keen to see whale sharks and this tour did just that. Most importantly we felt safe at all times, and although there were a lot of boats at the sighting all the tour operators were respectful of the animals and each other.
it was altough long, worth every minute. I was able to watch a vertical feeding from a whale and swam with two other swimming passing by me. excellent tour.
As promised, we saw many whale sharks and were allowed to swim with one twice. There, you can have more or less luck depending on whether it comes up to you or swims away.
We had a 2-hour journey, and in 30 minutes we found the whales!! Super fast. 3 whales :) Very lucky. So, we had three opportunities to get into the water, and then we went to an island to eat.
