Key takeaways

When to swim with whale sharks in Holbox?

Swim between 15 May and 17 September, the official season, and aim for the middle of it for the best odds.

The season window is fixed by the reserve management programme, so no operator can legally take you earlier. Within the window, the animals arrive in numbers as the summer feeding builds.

The season window

The Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve off northern Quintana Roo sets the observation season at 15 May to 17 September, per the management programme summary published in the DOF. SEMARNAT publishes exact dates for each zone about two months ahead. A tour outside the official dates is considered illegal, so ignore anyone offering a shoulder-season bargain.

PeriodWhat to expect
15 May to 31 MaySeason opens. Sightings possible but odds drop at the edges of the season.
JuneNumbers build as the water warms past 25C and the sharks feed on bonito eggs.
July and AugustPeak. Hundreds gather at the Afuera feeding grounds and daily sightings are highest.
SeptemberStill inside the season, but odds fall again towards the 17 September close.

What is the best month to swim with whale sharks?

July is the single best month, with July and August together the strongest stretch of the season.

If your dates are flexible, pick the middle. Local operators quote July and August as the peak period in Holbox waters.

Month by month from Holbox

A local provider quoted in the press puts the Holbox peak in July and August, with more than 150 sharks claimed daily in the viewing area. During the 2026 peak, operators reported up to 50 or more sightings a day and boat occupancy close to 70 percent on the first weekend of August. Sighting odds drop dramatically at the beginning and end of the season.

July and August also line up with the Whale Shark Festival and the Sea Turtle Festival in summer, plus the most intense bioluminescence and migrating flamingos from June to September.

Tours That Fit

Shared group boats that run all season long from Isla Holbox.

Which is better, Isla Mujeres or Holbox?

Both reach the same feeding grounds near Afuera, so the animals are identical and the choice is about travel time and where you want to stay.

All northern Yucatan tours converge on one deep-water area nicknamed Afuera, east of Isla Contoy.

Same sharks, different bases

Every boat in the north of Yucatan visits the same aggregation area, about 35 km from Isla Mujeres and roughly 1 to 2 hours of bumpy navigation from most ports. The old Cabo Catoche congregation off Holbox now sits inside the protected Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve and is no longer where tours go. Departure point mostly changes your travel time, not your chances.

Holbox suits travellers who want a car-free island base with the swim as one part of a beach trip. Isla Mujeres suits those coming from Cancun who want the shortest run to the grounds.

Are tours outside the official season illegal?

Yes, any tour outside the official dates is considered illegal, and permitted boats also follow strict rules in the water.

The reserve sets limits on boats, visitors and swimmer behaviour. Knowing the rules helps you spot a legitimate operator.

Boats, visitors and hours

The programme summary allows a maximum of 160 boats per day and 1,350 visitors per day in the reserve, with tours running in daylight only between 07:00 and 14:00. A press report citing the management plan gives 120 boats per day with a maximum of 10 guests plus 3 crew per boat, and an average of 8.4 visitors per boat. Permit holders have proposed cutting the season from 120 days to 60 days in July and August, but that remains a proposal only.

What is the weather like on Holbox during whale shark season?

Season months are hot and humid, with highs of 33C to 34C, and September is the wettest and riskiest month for cancelled boats.

Wind and rain decide whether your boat sails, so the calendar matters as much as the sharks.

Heat, rain and cancellation risk

Average highs sit at 34C in May, July and August and 33C in June and September, with lows around 19C to 21C. Rain peaks in September at 199 mm, followed by June at 167 mm and October at 164 mm. The ride to the feeding grounds takes 1 to 2 hours of open water, so take seasickness pills and expect activity to be suspended when wind tops 25 km/h.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November and peaks around 10 September, which overlaps the tail of the whale shark season. Holbox hoteliers report the island stays free of sargassum thanks to the Cabo Catoche barrier.

How do you plan a whale shark day from Holbox?

Sleep on the island the night before, catch an early boat inside the 07:00 to 14:00 window, and pack biodegradable kit only.

A little planning turns a long boat day into an easy one.

Getting there and sleeping over

Holbox sits about 90 miles and a 2 hour drive from Cancun, followed by a ferry crossing of about 25 minutes. Ferries run roughly hourly from early morning to late evening from both operators, with first boats at 05:00 or 06:30 and the last between 21:00 and 21:30. Because tours leave in the morning, most swimmers spend a night on the island rather than racing the first ferry.

What to bring

Pack biodegradable sunscreen and biodegradable repellent, plus sunglasses, a hat and water. Mask, fins and snorkel come with the tour, and a life jacket is required. Leave flash photography, selfie sticks and artificial light behind, and never touch a shark.

Fill the rest of your trip

The same months bring the island's other highlights. Bioluminescence is most intense from June to September, best seen at Punta Cocos on the western tip, and the Holbox bioluminescence kayak tour takes you out after dark. Migrating flamingos and prime birdwatching run June to September, and the Holbox 3 island tour covers the reserve waters closer to shore.

If you fly in late, the Cancun airport to Holbox shuttle handles the road leg.

Where is the best place to swim with whale sharks in Mexico?

The north of Yucatan, where hundreds of whale sharks gather at the Afuera feeding grounds inside the 145,988 hectare Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve, is one of the largest aggregations in the world.

The gathering off Quintana Roo rivals any on the planet, and the animals themselves are the reason to come.

Meet the biggest fish in the sea

Whale sharks can grow to over 40 feet long and weigh up to 11 tons, yet they are harmless filter feeders that can live up to 150 years. They arrive each summer when the water passes 25C to feed on bonito eggs and plankton. The reserve they gather in covers about 146,000 hectares from Isla Contoy to Ascension Bay, and visitors also report manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles and jellyfish.

The species is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and as threatened in Mexican law under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, which is why every trip runs under permit with a certified guide.
